Wayback Wednesday: Beach Baby

This morning dawned – and has remained – gray and rainy, so when I dove into my shoebox-of-photos this morning looking for a Wayback Wednesday picture, I was looking for something that would suggest sun and warmth. I think this picture of me fearlessly wandering into the ocean at about the age of three fits the bill:

Ocean City, MD, c. 1974
Ocean City, MD, c. 1974

Far and away, the best thing about this photo is the fact that the two men chatting in the corner of the photo – the ones who appear to have no involvement whatsoever with me – are my dad and uncle. I am walking into the surf and no one seems to be noticing. It’s fairly safe to assume that my mom and aunt are somewhere just outside the frame actually paying attention, but that’s not the story this picture tells. I look like a totally unguarded child about to get into a mess of trouble.

However, this is what comes next:

Yup. Adorable splashing in the surf with my cousin Susan. Tragedy averted!

There are similar pictures of me and my brothers at the beach. I’m sure my parents were right there diligently watching so we didn’t drown. Or we just got lucky. One of those 🙂

Although you are adorable, and blonde, and the picture warms me just to see it (feel my grin), what most catches is me is how thin and muscled our Dads were! Wow!
Then I see more of yours and Sue’s blond hair, and my homemade bathing suit. What Sue may catch is that this photo was snapped before Mom coated us in zinc oxide and crammed our ears with lambs wool? Feel like pop tarts or singing the Mr. Frosty song, anyone?

Thanks for bringing back so many good memories!

Trust me — either Anne or I were taking the photo!! YOU little bathing beauties were not unsupervised. And you ALL were well coated in sunscreen for sure. 🙂 and, I am grinning too!

Totally jumped on to say Mom was NOT around…no bathing cap? zinc? cotton balls? Aunt Mary…you must have won that round that day if she was snapping pix with me so dangerously bare of protection :-)!!!!!

@Susan: And the other big missing piece…no t-shirt? Just a bathing suit! I’m surprised we made it past the age of 10, what without supervision and left unprotected in the elements like that! 🙂
