
Thirty-five years ago, on the Wednesday after Labor Day, my mom took the photo above, as my neighbor Andy and I walked down the street for our first day of kindergarten. I have other pictures from this day, with us smiling, holding hands, and showing off our spiffy yellow name tags, but this is my favorite. I like that we’re heading off all on our own – no parents in sight, while also knowing they’re there, just outside the frame.
Please note that then, as now, l loved me some red shoes.

I remember this moment like it was this morning!! You were off excited and happy for the next phase of your life… Andy’s Mom, Margaret, and I are right behind ya (teary). She was thrilled when I found this pic a couple of years ago.
