Wayback Wednesday: First Day of School

Walking to kindergarten, 1976.

Thirty-five years ago, on the Wednesday after Labor Day, my mom took the photo above, as my neighbor Andy and I walked down the street for our first day of kindergarten. I have other pictures from this day, with us smiling, holding hands, and showing off our spiffy yellow name tags, but this is my favorite. I like that we’re heading off all on our own – no parents in sight, while also knowing they’re there, just outside the frame.

Please note that then, as now, l loved me some red shoes.
