Wayback Wednesday: Mystery

Where am I?
Where am I?

I know I said last week that I was going to take a place-based tangent on the Wayback Wednesday theme for a while, but while looking for the photo I intended to use today, I came across the picture above and was flummoxed. I have no recollection of having ever seen this picture before, and stranger still, absolutely no idea where I was or who I was with when it was taken. Happily, it bears one of those annoying camera date stamps, so it was presumably taken on June 28, 2003. I am more than a little disturbed by the fact that this was less than a decade ago and yet I am drawing a complete blank. And it’s not like I go swimming next to a waterfall every day, so this ought to stand out, but… Nope.

So, if any of you out there in blogland – who also happen to know me outside the pixel world – can shed some light on this, I’d be most grateful.

    1. Dude you were super skinny back then 🙂
    2. While I have no idea, my guess would be Ithaca in the water falls but you don’t look freezing and I’m not sure the water would be that warm in June. Those are my ideas.

Yes, I did note that clearly, my metabolism wasn’t dead yet in 2003. Damn thyroid…

I’m pretty sure it’s not Ithaca; I don’t think I’ve been in the gorges there since high school.

Was this during your Thailand, etc. trip? Hope my guess is not annoying, as I have no clue and have never seen this photo previously. In light of a news story I heard today, I’m glad to see you in the calm pool at the bottom!

    • Sarah July 20, 2011 / 3:39 pm

Nope, not Thailand. That was… 2006, I think.

Was this that time you were on that Oceanic flight that crashed on that crazy island?

    • Sarah July 20, 2011 / 3:41 pm

Haha! It does look like that, doesn’t it? Wonder where Sawyer is hiding?

  5. wendalicious July 20, 2011 / 2:06 pm

Was it a Porn Palace excursion? I think we went swimming in some abandoned quarry or something one time.

    • Eileen July 20, 2011 / 2:14 pm

      Porn Palace. Please explain

  6. wendalicious July 20, 2011 / 2:31 pm

    Hahahahahaha! Sorry.

For a few years back in the early 2000’s, our college friends all gathered together and rented a house in the Catskills. It was a 70’s-era ski chalet that housed about 40 people, and had not been redecorated since the Nixon administration. It even included a 10-foot tall fully-decorated Christmas tree, mirrored walls, spiral staircases, and shag carpet throughout.

The decor reminded us of cheesy adult films, and thus the “Porn Palace” was named. Very innocent, I assure you!

      Thanks Wendy. 🙂

I also think our first visit there was right around the time “Boogie Nights” came out, and the house passed more than a passing resemblance to one of the houses in that movie.

I was gonna go with porn palace too, but I don’t think those were ever in June? I could be wrong. That’s my best guess though…looks similar to the spot where Deb slipped and hit her head, explaining a lot of her actions in the past several years…

Any chance you were on a HHA trip back then to somewhere warm?

    • Sarah July 20, 2011 / 5:41 pm

Alas, no. My work trips involved way more hotel ballrooms than waterfalls.

Ummm….are you sure the camera date is right? You may have always been good about that, but I have baby pictures of the girls dated from 1994….when they weren’t born. Just a thought..

    • Sarah July 20, 2011 / 5:45 pm

That is a very real possibility, but since I don’t know where the picture even came from, I have no idea if the date setting was accurate. Because it’s the only clue I’ve got, I have to hope it’s right. (Though if it were to be off by a couple of months, it would make the Catskills theory more plausible, because, like Chris, I don’t think we ever went in June.)

  10. Marlene July 20, 2011 / 5:50 pm

If the date is correct, then it was not the Porn Palace. The last year we went was 2002, (I checked the glass to make sure of that.), and as previously mentioned, we were never there in June, always August.

Could that have been your Baja CA trip with the Trust group? The rocks & waterfalls make me think more Pacific than Atlantic. You surely would not have been standing calmly in Northern Atlantic waters (where there are rocks) in June! Baja, oh maybe “yes”. BTW, great photo 😉

P.S. to M & C — HAPPY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! 14 years!! Woo Hoo. You’re getting to be old-timers. Love you both! Ma H

    • Chris Otto July 21, 2011 / 11:20 pm

Thanks!! I still have a hard time wrapping my head around that 14 years thing…next thing you know it’ll be 20! Oy. I think I just got some more gray in my beard.

  13. Mom July 21, 2011 / 9:40 am

Copper-colored rocks … Copper Canyon (swimming with the seals). ?????

    • Sarah July 21, 2011 / 10:16 am

Nope – definitely not that trip. Mexico (or that trip to Mexico, anyway) was in 2001, not 2003, and the photos from it are all grouped together and this one doesn’t match up. Good try, though.

POSSIBLE SOULTION: Could this have been on the rafting trip you, J, B, & I took down the Hudson or Sagandaga (I can’t remember)? The date would be right before 4th of July weekend, when we could have been there. The background sorta looks like your Luzerne photo & mine (ferns cropping out of the rocks). Did you jump out of the raft and “we” took your photo? Hmmm…..

    • Sarah July 25, 2011 / 11:07 am

Possibly, though I don’t remember there being waterfalls along the Hudson. But then, this whole exercise pretty much demonstrates how bad my memory is, so maybe there are…
