Just under the wire as the week comes to a close, here are three beautiful things from my last seven days:
1. I wrote about my lovely new nephew in last week’s three beautiful things post, but I spent a lot of my flight home on Monday thinking about how beautiful it is to watch my sister and brother-in-law finally get to be parents. They’re in an unspeakably difficult — and potentially heartbreaking — situation as foster parents, but have poured their whole hearts out for their little boy nevertheless. They’re living proof that genetics is not the only thing that makes a family.
2. The weather in DC is finally getting a little December-y (that is, cold), so the neighborhood smells pleasantly like wood smoke from fireplaces as I walk home in the evening.
3. Christmas cookies. Need I say more?
(Honorable mention: I was excited in the beginning of the week when the Caps took the lead in the Eastern Conference, but — despite a couple of shaky outings — they’re finishing the week at the top of the NHL. Who knows how long it will last, but for now, it counts as a beautiful thing in my world.)
