(Festive) Friday Favorites

As part of my renewed effort to keep the blog lively, I’ve been thinking about new regular features to add. Ages ago, Eileen came up with the theme “Friday Favorites,” but she only posted on it a couple of times. I thought this seemed like a good topic to revive; after all, I have many favorite things (not as many as, say, Oprah, but plenty) and I’m a sucker for an alliterative title. And the holiday season seems like a particularly good time to start, since it means I get to talk about my holiday faves.

I’ll start with my favorite Christmas ornament, which always hung front and center on the tree at my parents’ house. I picked it out myself when I was maybe four or five, when the best thing in the world was an angel made out of pink feathers. (Yes, feathers.) It’s super-cheezy — a plastic head on a paper cone with a layer of Bourbon Street boa-quality feathers — yet I have an absurd amount of sentimental attachment to it. It’s been glued back together more than once, but still manages to make an appearance every year.

My beloved ornament’s time, however, may be getting short. Earlier in the week, my mom sent me a picture from her tree this year, wherein my angel is more propped than hung. Another gluing may do the trick, but there might not be enough paper cone left. So sad.

I am touched that your angel made the first Friday Favorite :). I know you & Loon and Sue remember Valley View Farm where we had hours of fun selecting bagsfull of ornaments?? Anyone else have a fav ornament story to share.

Valley View Farms is actually an industry standard – no kidding. While at a garden center here, I got into a discussion with the manager, and when she learned I was from Baltimore she asked if I had ever heard of Valley View. Apparently, people from around the country are sent there to study their program in an attempt to simulate it in their own communities. How are we doing here? Well, it will never meet my memories of Valley View. And favorite ornament? Sue knows: the two “girl” snowmen wearing tacky bright green cloaks and riding the pretzel sleigh (purchased at Valley View Farms).

That’s funny. I have no childhood memories of Valley View but went as an adult living in B’more and loving all things Christmas. I hadn’t thought about them in a while. Thanks for the stroll down memory lame 🙂 (that is a typo worth keeping for it’s humor. Should be lane)

I’m with the pretzel girls…I thought I tried to save them one Christmas…but a quick check of my ornaments means “the girls” still need to be rescued from a “cleaning up” moment at 1210! 🙂
