I realize I am a day late in posting my three beautiful things from last week, but I was just plain exhausted yesterday after my overnight flight back from Jordan. I’ll have more on the trip over the course of the week (including more pictures), but I’ll start with three highlights:
1. We could not have asked for a better driver for our trip. Emad not only took us everywhere, but taught us a little Arabic, introduced us to some of his friends and family, and laughed with us throughout the trip. He truly became a friend, rather than just someone we hired.
2. Emad was not the only person we met in Jordan who liked to laugh — all the Jordanians we met seemed to have a tremendous sense of humor, quick wit, and love for sarcasm. Whether they were joking with us in English, or bantering among themselves in Arabic, something funny was always happening. I honestly can’t recall the last time I laughed so much.
3. Petra by night is quite possibly the most amazing thing I have ever experienced. The 40-minute walk from the visitors center and though the siq (canyon) is lit only by candles, and upon entering the city, the entire main plaza in front of the treasury is filled with more candles. It was a clear night — the sky was filled with stars — which made for an absolutely magical atmosphere for listening to traditional Bedouin music and drinking sage tea.
