This Never Happens at My Job

As a web girl and hockey fan, I can’t help but think that Brett Leonhardt had the best work day ever yesterday.

José Theodore unexpectedly, it seems, came up injured, which prevented him from backing up Brent Johnson last night, leaving the Caps without a second goalie. AHL prospect Simeon Varlamov was en route from Houston for a chance to warm the Capitals’ bench, but he wasn’t going to make it by game time. What to do? Apparently, the answer is “give the web guy a contract.” Yep — the team got permission to sign their web producer to allow him to suit up. He didn’t get to play, but still, how cool is that?

“Early afternoon [General Manager] George McPhee came over to my cubicle, tapped me on the shoulder. . . . He kind of scared me, he goes: ‘Be ready,’ ” said Leonhardt, who practiced with Washington twice this week, something he has done a handful of times since joining the Capitals in December 2007.
