My DC: Old Naval Hospital

This week’s My DC photo are of the Old Naval Hospital, which I used to pass every day on my way to work when I lived on 9th Street. It’s one of my favorite buildings in the neighborhood, and also one of the saddest. It’s been abandoned (or nearly so) as long as I’ve lived here, though it was briefly touted as a possible mayoral mansion during the Williams administration. There is now a plan in place for it to be restored as a community education and meeting hub called the Hill Center. This seems like a perfect use to me, but it just doesn’t seem like there is any activity going on there right now — and the only citations I can find about it online, other than the Hill Center’s site, are about a year old. I guess I’ll just keep my fingers crossed.

The place looks like it now needs a lot of TLC and lots of $$$. The detail on the dwelling and the fencing must have been a grand sight when it was new. Thanks for the look-back.
