If You Want to Feel Younger…

Go hang out at the hospital’s cataract surgery center. It’s not depressing like the rest of the hospital, since people aren’t sick, but they sure are old. I spent half a day there yesterday with Mom, and we really broke the curve on age in no small way. Getting cataracts in your early 60s doesn’t appear to be very common. (Mom just read over my shoulder and told me to emphasize “early.”)

My favorite old person was the woman who was marveling loudly to her son — who appeared to be about my mom’s age — that she felt like she was “behind the times,” because all of the other women were wearing pants and not dresses. In 2007, she was sincerely thunderstruck by the trousers on the ladies. Hm. Yes, ma’am, though I am not sure merely “behind the times” is sufficient. My 91-year-old grandmother wore pants, so I have to wonder if this woman was perhaps time-traveling from 1907.

Anyway, Mom’s surgery went splendidly well, and she was back home by lunchtime. The weather has been exceptionally Binghamton-y (read: gray and gloomy) so she has barely had to wear the comically-awful post-cataract sunglasses to protect her eye. She’s back to knitting today and will return to the office tomorrow. And I’ll be flying home to DC this evening, unless US Airways again decides that close is good enough, in which case I’ll end up in Baltimore or Richmond, just as I ended up in Syracuse rather than Binghamton on Monday night. But that’s a whole ‘nother story…

Glad Mom is doing well. You’re a good daughter. 🙂
